It's so wild how different the reaction to a new Steam console has been this time

Ten years ago the Steambox was mocked to an early grave. But this Steam Machine I've seen people actually pretty positive about!

Maybe it just makes more sense against current tech/current market

Alright, fixing it for you Valve, but it's the last time.

With Xbox out of the game or at least seems to be leaving.

Valve has the opportunity to do the funniest thing and announce the PYP (Said like Pipe) Console.

As Pipes hold steam, it'd be the next evolution of the Steambox Running the new Steam OS adapted for a home console experience.

microsoft trying to make xboxes into hybrid PCs is a good move for 12 years ago, not now

the Steambox concept with Windows would have actually worked. but they waffled for two generations with dedicated consoles with no games and now, finally, they remembered they don’t have to play that game

I don’t think it’ll be a console as we currently view them. More like a “SteamBox” type PC designed to be used with a TV. Something that makes actual PC gaming hassle-free in the way console gaming is.

If Xbox finally makes a machine that plays Windows games, that could be cool. I'm certainly not gonna upgrade to Win11, so this could be an alternative to a Steambox or whatever Valve comes up with next.

who wants to take bets on the operating system running the #steambox being called GladOS?

8GB of VRAM and 16GB of system RAM is actually quite a bit to work with on a device that's custom optimized for gaming, especially if you're targeting 1080p or 1440p.

The PS5 Pro has functionally less than those Steambox specs because it only has 16GB total both the CPU and GPU have to share

Wonder if we either get the 'steambox' and it will play a serious part or this is just step 1 of the collapse of consoles as we know them. That we are heading for a future where it is handhelds and just pc and laptops and of course phones for al your gaming....consoles that fun relic of the past?

My current project is a 1:25 model of a steam locomotive. It's the most detailed and complex model I've ever built and even though it is not finished yet, there are already more than 7000 parts. #papercraft #train #scalemodel

This feels like deja vu with the steambox

Me - I don't really understand who the Steambox is for.
My TL - Us.

This being said... I do not expect this system to make a large impact. PC is still an imperfect ecosystem, and unless Valve plans on getting these things in Walmarts and Bestbuys, I think the reach is going to be limited.

Compatibilidad con el catalogo antiguo de juegos. Pero como ya no venden apenas fisico... ¿estan transicionando a intentar ser Steam + steamBox?

I enjoy the console experience and the PC experience, so I like to have both as well.

But my console experience (Nintendo doesn't count here lmao, league of their own) is Xbox, and a SteamBox could totally replace that if done correctly, 100%.

Honestly if Steam put out a Steambox that I could use as a desktop my ass would be in line for it rn

I've felt like the NextBox is essentially going to be a service that puts PC hardware into a big picture style Xbox UI that can emulate older consoles rather than a dedicated console and that they pivot to minimum spec hardware steambox equivalents.

An Xbox handheld would just be a windows tablet
