#StMartinFiddington
The #MouseFavouritePhoto from #StMartinFiddington #Somerset just had to involve the tower, which is a truly striking feature of the church and with the perfect polygonal stair turret. All is well. All is very well indeed

The enduring allure of #ChurchDoorFittings

The decoration of the straps is original and to a similar, but somewhat less expansive, design as that at #StMaryWedmore

When the postfix 'style' is added to something in the Listing, bets are being hedged. This is described as Perpendicular-style probably for fear that it's actually C19. Otherwise it looks nailed on late C15. It is. #StMartinFiddington #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday

South of chancel #StMartinFiddington #Somerset for #AdoorableThursday

The tiniest priest's door set in a chamfered pointed doorway. Pure C19. Another chancel bites the dust in the sunami of Victorian church 'restoration'

South porch interior #StMartinFiddington #Somerset for #AdoorableThursday

Charmingly simple planked door with decorative ironwork set in a low segmental pointed arch doorway. Just as simple as the door, the doorway has an arris rather than any moulding

One of three 2-light windows to north elevation. C19. Chamfered rebate. Cusped #Ogee lights and monolithic head

Chancel roof: #StMartinFiddington #Somerset for #WoodensDay

The structure is more or less the same as that in the nave. All solid C15 and with few, if any, discernable repairs or alterations

Pointed 2-light window with pointed cusped lights and cusped roundel over. All the clues to its C19 origin are there. Mouse love the abandoned clues to the recent rough cast repairs to the tower

Nave roof: Part II of II #StMartinFiddington #Somerset for #WoodensDay

All is revealed: from an angle you can see that curved timbers are affixed to the rafters extending from wall beam to purlin. Every fourth is moulded. This was once a wagon roof, with those timbers exposed

The tower is rough-cast and (probably) dressed with lime wash. The blue of the clock face looks fabulous set against its bright white background #FiddingtonTower Part (2/4)

A 3-stage embattled tower. Diagonal buttresses with offsets extend to the second stage on three corners (a stair turret occupies the north east corner). #FiddingtonTower Part (1/4)

Is there a more striking tower than this? Mouse not sure she has seen one on her myriad scampers to date. A perfectly proportioned 2-light pointed window graces each face of the bell stage #FiddingtonTower Part (3/4)

Mouse chance her paw on the fact that this is what a medieval church tower would have looked like (possibly marginally less white). So where do you stand? Rough-cast or bare stone? Which gives you the flutters?

Listed as a C15 piscina. It's not. It's at knee height for a start and a chamfered pointed continuous arch. No basin, no drain... no pop, no style

Double chamfered segmental pointed stilted arch. That's a lot of adjectives for one smallish arch. It's amazing that the octagonal piers and responds can take the weight of such a description. All C19 by the by

This is such a beautiful chancel and perfect when framed in this wide C14 double chamfered pointed arch

Large numbers of pulpits seem to have been produced in what we know as the Jacobean period of English history, for reasons as yet unclear to Mouse. This is a fine example, and demanded the fine quality C19 plinth on which it now stands #StMartinFiddington #Somerset #SundaySermons

One for #StandingCrossSunday #StMartinFiddington #Somerset

Listed in its own right this cross (probably) dates to C14, and is contemporaneous with much of the fabric of the current church. Three stage calvary, socket stone and shaft. Cross lost in the normal way #StandingCross
