OTD, 1976, thousands of students took to the streets of Soweto in a courageous & fierce act of self determination to reject the European colonizer curriculum in their schools. The police attacked the children setting off the #SowetoUprising which lasted weeks & was a major catalyst for the mvmt.

Today marks two important days:
1. #InternationalDayOfTheAfricanChild, which was first initiated by the OAU, now AU in 1991 in honour of those who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976.
2. #YouthDay in South Africa, which commemorates the #SowetoUprising of 16 June, 1976.

The police fired teargas and live ammunition on demonstrating students. The official count is that 176 protesters were killed, but actual estimates are much higher. 2/2
