I think we need a term for less than Soulslike or Soulslite. I propose Soulsvibe for when you want to market your project with the association of Souls games, but don't really have the mechanics to make that association.

soulslike is such a nonsense genre, largely divorced from any really calcified meaning other than "people ripping fromsoft off," that it's more of a secondary aesthetic genre rather than a specific gameplay one imo. and yeah, hollow knight is incredibly obviously dark souls inspired

Yeah, HK is a metroidvania platformer in terms of progression. But very much a soulslike in terms of aesthetic and gameplay philosophy. It's got the environmental story telling, the hard as nails bosses, the reset points and run back to corpes for resources lost if you die again.

if you would’ve told me two years ago, I would be super into soulslike games. I would’ve said you were crazy, but getting into it and understanding how the leveling works really made the difference. Now I’m sort of obsessed with em' and I can’t wait for a new Bloodborne
