Opinion: Gov. Newsom, no more delays in shutting Aliso Canyon down
The California Public Utilities Commission proposed to keep the natural gas field open without a closure deadline. That would run afoul of our energy needs and health.

$71M for cleaner air, resilient homes, & heat pumps where the US's largest methane leak happened.

The catch? The state still wants Aliso Canyon open. Demand that the CA governor & CPUC keep their promise to #ShutAlisoDown! @denisegrab.bsky.social legal-planet.org/2024/11/26/c...
CPUC Should Set a Date for Closing Aliso Canyon - Legal Planet
CPUC's proposed decision on Aliso Canyon gives too much deference to SoCalGas regarding the future of gas demand and misses an opportunity.

“California can meet its grid needs without gas… Aliso Canyon can close by 2027… But we need to seize the moment,” according to an Op Ed piece in today's LA Times.

@GavinNewsom promised action, but he seems okay with some one million people being poisoned by this facility. #ShutAlisoDown
Aliso Canyon is the site of one of the largest gas blowouts in US history. 97,000 tonnes methane; 7,300 tonnes ethane over 112 days, forming carcinogens+air pollutants. 8,000 families relocated.

The LA Times Op-Ed by @mzjacobson makes it clear: CA can close Aliso Canyon now.
– Gas consumption has dropped 20% since 2015.
– Clean energy + batteries meet grid needs.
– Heat pumps + efficiency = the future.

“Bonkers." That’s what experts call CA Governor Gavin Newsom’s inaction on Aliso Canyon. Health & safety comes first, not SoCalGas profits.

Gavin Newsom, it’s not too late to fix this. It's time to keep your promise.
