Very much this. Google bought SIPphone (and lots of others) to kill it. Microsoft bought Skype to kill it. Drug manufacturers buy competitors to kill their drug research something like 85% of the time.

SIPphone was the one that hurt the most for me (later branded Gizmo5 or something). Adopt and extinguish has been a tried and true model for Google. And they've killed SO MANY promising things over the years (and some really awful ones). Was just looking at killedbygoogle.com to jog my memory...
