Roger Ebert reviewed this film in September of 1988 and gave this film 4 stars and called it one of the best films of the year.

It’s sad that Hollywood doesn’t make films like this anymore. Everything now is Marvel universe or DC universe or remakes nobody asked for.
This film and ‘Midnight Run’ from 1988 are spectacular films that wouldn’t be made today. Oh what we have lost.

I have loved this film since I saw it at the theater in 1988.
I’m the same age as River and my parents were semi Left Wing Radicals and it was really confusing but as I grew older I understood their views.
I love it.

The scene should have won Lahti the Oscar, it’s that good , but she wasn’t even nominated. Jodie Foster won Best Actress for The Accused and Gina Davis won Best Supporting Actress for The Accidental Tourist that year.
