Record high ocean temperatures continued across the North Pacific in October 2025, with recent warming really amplifying since the early 2000s.

This graph shows the average for a band across the midlatitudes for every October from 1854-2025 using
NOAA ERSSTv5 data (psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded...).

Hurricane Erick has intensified to a Category 4 with 230 km/h winds, nearing Mexico's Pacific Coast. Its rapid strengthening raises alarm amid climate change, differing from last year's Hurricane Otis.

Woah, the hot spot across the northern Pacific is even more prominent in last month's sea surface temperature map. This is really quite striking! Though the extratropics in both hemispheres are warmer than average too.
