Okay so probably nobody knows a lot about Gilded Age economics, but that would be the equivalent of investing in Apple or Microsoft in the 1980s.
In an 1880s Belgian block industry magazine, Micheal Shannon calculated how much could be made from quarrying The Palisades for Belgian blocks.

Predictably @australianlabor.bsky.social is chest beating in #qt about the veritable truckload of jobs that will accrue from its critical minerals quarrying push.
Meanwhile a conga line of grifting multinationals will be showered in corporate welfare to realise this folly

Mining, quarrying, ports, fisheries (including Newfoundland Grand Banks) it seems the rural nature of the West Country obscures much else, a rural worker might go to sea, be a miner, textiles could be rural or urban.

Black people, particularly enslaved laborers, participated in every stage of the construction, from quarrying & transporting stone to the actual building process, working alongside European craftsmen & free African-American laborers. Trump is a lifelong RACIST spawned by generations of racists. So,

The "drill, baby, drill" slogan belies the relatively small role of *all* mining, quarrying, O&G extraction activities in the Canadian economy.
It's hugely capital intensive (only 1.2% of all jobs) but rip, strip and ship activities contribute just 5.1% to GDP... not even in the top 10 sectors.

Canada wide: In 2024, 4.4 million (21.2%) Canadians earn their living from a job in the care economy. In the entire Canadian industrial sector that mines, quarries, drills and extracts, there were 264K jobs. The care economy generates 13.6% of GDP. The entire mining, etc. sector generates 5.1%.

Incredible morning on my Winter Bird Survey @bbs-birds.bsky.social it's a 50/50 mix of farmland and quarries (was 100% farmland when I started in 2006 but HS2 has meant quarrying is taking over) 740 individuals of 46 species logged with the help of a few big flocks of starling and lapwings

The village of Ellenabeich on the Isle of Seil south of Oban. Seil is connected to the mainland by "The Bridge Over the Atlantic" and is the most easily accessible of the Slate Islands, whose fortune was built on the quarrying of slate. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

On Friday I saw Transmutation at AFFR, 50 minutes of limestone mining, quarrying and processing. It was essentially a @machinepix.bsky.social super cut which was perfect after a long week's work

'Thor's stone' rising above Thurstaton [=Thorstein+tūn] Heath (Wirral), the latter used for common grazing since time began. The stone’s encircled by a broken ring of peaty ponds, the result of quarrying - but I can't help thinking of other monuments where the juxtaposition was deliberate

With Storm Amy battering the northern part of the UK I thought I would go down to the coast to see some decent waves crashing into the cliffs at high tide. There is one place that I know of and that is #Dancingledge in the #Purbecks. #Stunday #EastCoastKin #Photography #Waves #Seascape

Doing this with by-product stone sounds great. Quarrying fresh stone just to crush it sounds like more of the sort of short sighted and wasteful bullshit that has gotten us into this mess.

The care economy is an economic powerhouse (all annual 2024 data, bigger now)
13.7% of GDP. Eclipses real estate (13.2%). 1.5 x bigger than all manufacturing, 2x bigger than construction, almost 3x bigger than all mining, quarrying and O&G.
>21% of all jobs. Nothing comes remotely close to that.

A prominent noble businesswoman and military veteran, Ari is the de-facto head of the Stygian Arena, which she manages with an iron fist. Much of her wealth comes from Viridian Marble, a quarrying company once owned by her late husband.

Let me just put something in context, blaming Immigration for everything is even more ludicrous than blaming quarrying and mining which contributes 10x what immigration costs to the economy.
But do know of any quarrying and mining in the UK?
