To psychometrics, from thermometry - Joel Michell, 2025
Since the 19th century, psychometrics has found false hope in reconstructions of thermometry’s history, as if the former’s failure to investigate whether psycho...

While teaching a course on Item Response Theory this semester, I created a Shiny app for visualizing some polytomous item response models: falkcarl.shinyapps.io/polytomous/

This is an initial draft, so comments/questions/suggestions are welcome!

"This large-scale project required a joint effort of 34 researchers across fields of philosophy, psychology, anthropology, social science and psychometrics – and from all over the world, connected in a research consortium called The Geography of Philosophy."
What makes a person seem wise? Global study finds that cultures do differ – but not as much as you’d think
Real wisdom is about a balance between thoughtful reasoning, social understanding and emotional awareness.

The marginalisation of sapience is historical. Rationalist traditions, psychometrics, and now data-driven governance have progressively narrowed the parameters of what counts as legitimate educational reasoning. 3/8

Measures what?

g factor? You mean psychometrics? Which again proposes some genetic superiority in cognitive abilities.

Introduction to Generalizability Theory - Livestream starting Mar 6, 2026 (UTC)
Join our two-day online workshop on Generalizability Theory (G theory) for PhD students, academics and professional researchers, taught by George Michaelides (Norwich Business School) and Duncan Jackson (King’s Business School): this hands-on RStudio course combines rigorous conceptual foundations with practical implementation—Day 1 covers univariate G theory and Frequentist analysis with lme4, Day 2 introduces Bayesian G theory with brms—enabling you to decompose variance components, compute and interpret G and Phi coefficients, design robust crossed/nested studies, and apply Bayesian methods (priors, sensitivity, posterior summaries and diagnostics) to improve measurement precision. Familiarity with R and basic multilevel/random effects models is required. Delivered live via Zoom with recordings, code and materials available for 30 days plus a monitored Q&A forum; participants receive a certificate of completion (ECTS equivalent where shown). Find out more and enroll to build immediately usable skills for your research. #BayesianStatistics #Education #HumanResourceManagement #Management #Medicine #Psychology #Psychometrics #DataScience #Statistics #Biostatistics #R #RStudio #Research #ResearchTraining #Instats

I'd also say they don't spend enough time in psychometrics on fundamental ontological assumptions (outside of a few weirdos on the field) or conceptual analysis of what even the things they are trying to measure are proposed to be

I feel like psychometrics education tends to be too focused on ”mathy” stuff (e.g. factor analysis) and too light on psychological stuff (e.g. thinking seriously about what’s happening when someone answers a questionnaire).

I don't think a Scriven transdiscipline is an *idea*, it's a *description*, or *analysis*. Statistics is (and long has been) a transdiscipline. So is psychometrics, information science, design, and a few more. That is simply how they work.

Everyone help @grimalkina.bsky.social. Plus I wanna see all the bad psychometrics practices.
Does anyone have a really go-to reference for bad psychometric practices in hiring? Especially cognitive assessment style stuff?

Not exactly fraudulent. Based on a research design that should have been reviewed by some psychometrics grad students first. This is one of those “you can’t edit your own work” types of error.

Self reports often have far better psychometrics underlying them

But they can suffer from plenty of challenges. For example, people often presume face validity without testing the underlying claim of a measure.

In short, the report (from memory) says that:
1) culture is bad - the institutional knowledge of the exam staff is not taken seriously by examiners
2) limited understanding of stats and psychometrics
3) no defined purpose for the exam (i.e. what's the point of exams?)

Foundations of Valid Measurement - Livestream starting Dec 2, 2025 (UTC)
Join Professor Dev Dalal (University at Albany) for a one‑day online workshop designed for PhD students, academics, and professional researchers in the social and health sciences who work with latent variables: learn to ground measurement in clear construct theory and definition, build testable nomological networks, and translate definitions into items, tasks, and protocols that support rigorous validation. Across four integrated sessions—construct theory, writing construct definitions, nomological network building, and measurement elements—you’ll get conceptual lectures, guided demonstrations, and hands‑on critique to practice writing precise construct definitions, designing validation studies, and choosing appropriate psychometric analyses (factor analysis, IRT basics, reliability, model fit) that strengthen dissertations, grant proposals, and manuscripts. The seminar is livestreamed via Zoom, includes recordings and an expert‑moderated Q&A forum available for 30 days after the event, and awards a certificate of completion (ECTS equivalent where shown). #Management #Psychometrics #ResearchMethods #SocialSciences #SurveyDesign #Statistics #Education #SocialTheory #Psychology #Research #ResearchTraining #Instats

Before we hit the party mode let’s pause and check how our teams are feeling. A quick pulse survey and maybe a fun psychometric chat can really help set the tone for next year.
What’s the one question you’d ask your team this week?

I do use the SBQ-R and have published psychometrics on it, but it is begging for a wording update. Some lit, including my teams, treat item 4 as a proxy for intent (e.g., within the IMV model). That said, the SITBI-R items have been very useful, whereas psychometrics on the Columbia vary.
