What a pretty, poisonous addition to the White House Kitchen Garden: Tephrosia virginiana (Devil's Shoestring). Looks a bit like sweet pea, no? The roots contain rotenone, which is used as an insecticide and fish poison. Oh, and it's a #NativePlant too! #PoisonousPlants 🌿

Gelsemium sempervirens 'Woodlanders Pale Yellow' is a rare form of the vine. Discovered by Chris Early in northwestern Florida, the pale yellow flowers distinguish this cultivar from the golden yellow flowers typical of the species. See: AltText. #NativePlants #PoisonousPlants #WhiteHouseGarden 🌱🌿

Pokeweed looks like elderberry, but it’s toxic and left me with blistering rashes. Don’t confuse the two. 🌿 Stay safe around wild plants.

Sweet little toxic Ranunculus hispidus is a #NativePlant in the eastern United States. Contact with the plant causes burning, itching, rash & blisters due to the acrid poisonous juices which protect it plant from animals. Would be a shame if this infiltrated the White House lawn... #PoisonousPlants

Now..... where to start the mushroom patch in the new White House Kitchen Garden? Some Russula subnigricans, and Amanita muscaria would be a nice start certainly. #poisonousplants #fungi

An old #painting from back in the day. On the left is foxglove, the right is monkshood (wolfsbane) and on the bottom is nightshade. All are poisonous, but kind of pretty, I thought!

Death Cap Mushrooms (Amanita phalloides) are widely available in North America and considered an invasive species - they are also extremely poisonous. The mushrooms can be found on lawns, in parks, along roadsides, and in the forest. Also on the White House lawn. ☠️ #PoisonousPlants #mushrooms
