Conference bullies. It's not on, for senior researchers to humiliate junior colleagues in public at conferences. The chairperson, other researchers or maybe even you need to step in. #PhDchat #ECRchat #postdoc #PhDforum

When you start a #PhD you are learning how to do research. You don't know how to do it so ask questions. Lots of questions. If you already knew how to do a PhD there wouldn't be any point in doing it. You are doing it to learn #PhDchat #PhDforum #ECRchat #postdoc #AcademicChatter

Starting a #PhD? Remember when you're doing a PhD you are learning how to do research. Which means it's OK not to know and OK to ask lots of questions. You don't know the answers at the start. #PhDchat #PhDForum #postdoc #MRes #academicchatter #acwri

Starting a #PhD? Warning: Steep learning curve ahead. As you start reading the literature you will begin to realise how little you know. That's OK. It's normal. You are learning. That's why you're doing the PhD. #PhDchat #PhDforum #gradschool

Starting a #PhD. Borrow some theses from the library. Ideally on a similar topic to yours. Look at how they are structured. How many chapters? How many words? Look at the bibliography. This could be a good starting point for your literature review. #PhDchat #PhDforum

When you're in the middle of some writing you might have a great idea on another topic. It's easy to get distracted or drawn away by the great new idea. Keep a good ideas book beside you and note them there to be followed up later. #PhDchat #PhDForum #academicchatter #ECRchat

Know your imposter moments:
- Your first lecture
- A new role
- Writing
- When you make a mistoke
These might make you feel like an imposter but they don't mean you are one.

The closest we ever get to perfection is writing our cv. We put in all the achievements and we leave out the yucky bits. This makes it look like nobody has ever failed. Just a series of successes. Yet in reality everyone has setbacks, rejections and failures. #PhDchat #PhDforum

You can't do it all. So you have to say NO to something. Look through the list and see if there is anything you can:
- delete
- defer
- delegate
You can't do it all.

Maybe it's not always Yes or No. Maybe you have more choices.
Explore the options.
Maybe you don't have to do it right now?
Maybe you don't have to do it all?
Maybe you could negotiate?
