Specifically something is really dysfunctional about roguelikes if I have to qualify that as Soft Roguelikes, thats still harder core than Roguelites.

he became bigger than he anticipated. His personal style for gaming is very niche super-hardcore ARPGs: permadeath, no skill resets/changes, serious inventory management. He wants a game he can safely get PISSED AS FUCK at and then get better.

BI was more of a source of confusion, it explained permadeath so well that it inspired Spelunky and Isaac devs. And then people reading BI without playing actual roguelikes assumed that permadeath was some crucial thing, while pre-BI definitions often did not even mention permadeath.

There's debate on if Caves of Qud is a "traditional roguelike" or not, and if it's not, it's probably the closest you can possibly get WITHOUT "counting" (the no permadeath mode isn't the reason, it's the VERY GOOD but not procgen storyline and RPG mechanics)

And Spelunky has no metaprog whatsoever. It's every aspect of roguelike philosophy (permadeath, fresh start, procgen, every object can Verb every other object), applied to an action platformer instead of a dungeon crawl. The fact it was an action game was what made it -lite :(
