#PMIG2025 and #SESP2025 were great: inspiring talks, plenty of time for networking, and taking place in beautiful Lisbon.
Hopefully the two conferences will continue to take place in Europe from time to time..? 😇

Ratings are relative - we judge a 5’ 7” woman to be “taller” than a 5’ 7” man. The same is true for social judgments - a woman who interrupts is seen as more assertive than a man.

Subjective ratings like this can “mask” stereotypes (stereotype = women are LESS assertive!)

Mainstream media’s coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict is biased in at least three ways:

Bias #1: Individualized vs group-level narratives

Bias #2: False balance

Bias #3: Differential doubt casting

What do we rely on more when judging a person - the way they look or what they do? It depends! Often, behaviors matter more than facial appearances (Josh is “helpful” if he helps an old woman cross the road, even if he doesn’t “look” like a helpful person).

Is unconscious bias real? @davidamodio.bsky.social points out critiques (people are aware of “implicit bias”) rely on semantics. In experiments, people have biased priors, which leads to biased “learning” (noticing stereotype-consistent info)…and. They aren’t aware and can’t suppress it. #PMIG2025
