It's something that really worries about the online world. To carry out even fundamental life admin - maintaining a bank account, getting government services, protect yourself from crime, etc - you now need a level of literacy and numeracy that a third of the population just don't have.

All those silly "Reform are doing well with the young" stories ... each less founded on basic numeracy than the last.

Primary 2/3 have been working so hard on our new numeracy topic. We have been using counting blocks, number lines and number squares to help us with addition to 20 👍📝

Parent (angry): You shouldn't be teaching data visualization in 1st grade!
Teacher (confused): Why not? It's important for numeracy.
Parent: My kid is too young for something so graphic.

I've always felt whole-word reading instruction was much like the "new math:" Someone looked at what kids with advanced literacy/numeracy did and said "Well, let's just start with that!" And never thought to say "Okay, but is that what the kids with advanced skills STARTED with?"

Fair. Although I do think there is a basic floor of numeracy and literacy that most employers would like, and it does not include some of the things tested on the foundation maths paper, or many of the things tested on the English language (non tiered) paper.

That’s about 1.4p each. I’m willing to forego my share to help make Andrea Jenkyns numerate.

I’m not usually prone to pedantry — at least not relative to the baseline “academic mathematician” lol — but the distinction between math & numeracy is a hill I will die on.
Someone who computes correctly is doing good math. Someone who selects the correct computation is practicing numeracy.

As an ex-teacher I'm going to for at least 50% of the population don't know what you're talking about. The NHS, for example, reckons it's 60% if literacy and numeracy is needed to understand health advice.

This was always the most authentic Rishi Sunak: the head boy and Asian Dad as Prime Minister, promoting more numeracy, more maths and more chess as the route to productivity and prosperity
We’re pleased to partnering with former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty on Number Nation, a new initiative to conduct the UK’s largest ever study into attitudes to everyday numbers – in partnership with the Richmond Project, Purposeful Ventures and Public First

I used to work in education supporting people who were unemployed find work. Part of that was assessing their literacy and numeracy levels. The average result was the equivalent to age 8-10 (the reading age of The Daily Mail).

Willis post poll putting Nats in the 20s: I want to see a New Zealand where more kids are learning to write and do maths, you need structured literacy and numeracy for that...I want to see a New Zealand where actually it's not just our ag sector growing, it's our tech sector growing.

Chess has been a very popular activity in the Den this week. I've had my own knowledge and skills put to the test when coaching them through the moves.♟️ Chess supports problem-solving, resilience, critical thinking, numeracy, and communication skills — all key priorities of the curriculum.

I think we can work together with families to understand what real numeracy looks like… and give the important work of the primary grades the time it needs. Some folks rush to get to what they see as more important- the algorithms. That is not the way. #ElemMathChat
