⚡️The power is back on in Bamfield and Anacla, thanks to the incredible work of #BCHydro crews who built 63 new poles and 65 spans of electrical wires in 8 days on a 6 km section of the Bamfield Rd burned out by the #MountUnderwoodFire. Heroic efforts - and ahead of schedule! 🙌🏼

#MountUnderwoodFire is now classified as
BEING HELD 🎉🎉
3,548 hectares

"Being Held" means the fire is no longer expected to grow beyond its current boundaries

Considering this fire's beginnings, achieving this goal in only 10 days is amazing. An epic amount of work with a huge assist from Nature.

The evacuation orders & alerts have been DOWNGRADED for the #MountUnderwoodFire

the evacuation orders have been downgraded to alerts. Campers will be allowed to return to China Creek Campground

Thanks to droughts and heat waves, tiny fires that crews were once able to extinguish in a matter of hours are now ballooning into major blazes.

3,603 hectares, down from 3,671. This doesn't necessarily mean it *shrank*, they could've just been able to map the perimeter more accurately with less smoke in the area.

Either way, good news. #MountUnderwoodFire

50 - 60 hydro poles were damaged or destroyed by the #MountUnderwoodFire. Over 20 km of power line needs to be replaced. But BC Hydro has been able to send crews in to begin preliminary work now. hopefully they can get power restored to Bamfield / Anacla soon - estimate right now is about 2 weeks

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then there’s a lot to say from these photos about the gratitude we’re feeling that BC Hydro is able to at least safely enter the #MountUnderwoodFire area to begin assessing damage to the infrastructure serving #BamfieldBC. Looking forward to more info.

6.6 mm of rain overnite has reduced #MountUnderwoodFire 's behaviour to a smoldering ground fire

But:

"While the rain will reduce fire behaviour and assist with allowing safer access for crews, heavy rain could affect slope stability and cause issues with rockfalls and danger trees in the area."

TFW you grew up afraid of nuclear war 😬

Note the sea state! Remember that "qualicum" wind i was posting about? I'd call this Beaufort 5 or 6. it was *ripping*. hard to stand straight into it.

The other name for a pyrocumulus cloud is flammagenitus.

#MountUnderwoodFire smoke plume sunrise at #DepartureBay #Nanaimo. Much cooler today, less windy though still breezy, and no smoke smell at ground level. Hoping for better conditions for fire fighting crews over the next few days.

We’re reassessing our plan to head to Rathtrevor Beach Park tomorrow. It’s been record-breaking hot this past week (36°C today where we are). And been very weird to come from a lush, green Calgary to a crunchy, dry coast. Feeling for the folks being evacuated. Travel in 2025. #MountUnderwoodFire

Folks Seattle southward could see AQI in the Moderate to perhaps USG range tonight from the #BearGulchFire. It appears the plume from the #MountUnderwoodFire will remain aloft, though I am curious to see if there's any subsidence east of the Cascades. #wawx #wawildfire #wasmoke

Two wildfires impacting WA tonight with smoke. First, the very active #BearGulchFire with periodic pyrocumulus over the last two hours. Second, the #MountUnderwoodFire on Vancouver Island producing an impressive smoke plume drifting toward Whatcom County. #wawx #wawildfire #BCFire
