That was gatekeeping.
And sadly, it’s still common in academia.
Scripts hoarded like secrets.

How about universities doing that step as mentoring and not dumping badly written manuscripts at journals for free writing support?

As senior editor I checked manuscripts for viability (i.e. within scope and having a chance), and rejected without further peer review if not. Not writing classes.

Very much agree with this. Started to become apparent with the WNBA and college products. There are so many networks and streaming options, feels like a lot of folks get spots without the same mentoring and training they might have had in previous eras.
I feel like we are in a crisis of bad pbp voices, right now. The expansion of the streamers, and there being so many more nba products, feels like it exposed that the NBA had no farm system for voice talent, and it is hurting.

With this one, it makes me wonder, WHAT THE HELL DOES THE DNC DO?
Should they not be SCOUTING possible future candidates and maybe having current office holders MENTORING some people?
Rep Dwight Evans is 71
