Some days I really wish I was still teaching about medievalism in the modern age...
For reasons too complex to explain here, I wrote an Apple II program designed for Early Modern Age Catholics to determine if they're allowed to have sex with their wife, or if it'd be a sin.

Here's the video of it running.

iirc thiel & adjacent neoreactionary weirdoes are obsessed w oldschool catholicism & faux-medievalism & I think there's this image of Tolkien as the cozy fireplace catholic intellectual that's v appealing to them? is my guess. he was from Oxford. the houses there have a look to them

Thrilled to read this review of THE GERMAN HEROIC TRADITION IN VIDEO GAMES: PLAYING MASS MEDIEVALISM, which reinforces my belief that monographs can be fun. 😀

Not this administration getting every medievalism fantasy reference wrong… or showing their true White (Supremacist) Walker / Sith / Nazgûl darkside…

It’s been a busy but exciting 1st week here in Oxford! Co-taught the first of our Medievalism seminars on biofiction, gave my first solo lecture at the new humanities centre, taught two study skills sessions & two intro classes to Old and Middle English 💥 Back with a bang, baby! (And now we sleep!)

Really enjoyed delivering my micro lecture on Medievalism at the new Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities this morning, alongside my brilliant colleagues Dan Wakelin and Ayoush Lazikani. Kicking off the medieval paper in style in the new auditorium! ✨

Beowulf is a work I never appreciated until I got into medievalism as a hobby, and did a performing arts event where a bunch of us nerds collectively learned and performed the text in a faux meadhall.

Context makes a huge difference.

Ars Magica is the white-whale tabletop game for me at this point because a lot of the stuff that makes it appealing make it a really difficult sell+it should be for long troupe style campaigns. Do you have an interest in medievalism? In strong social contracts between characters and factions?

15th C Aragonese Castle of Otranto: also title of 1st ever Gothic novel.

Horace Walpole's 1764 story played on medievalism + terror, generating a lasting tide of ghosts + ghouls.

He chose name as it was 'well sounding', not even aware of real castle on Puglian coast till 1786.

There's a limit to wasting all your energy trying to combat the vile hordes of flag-shagging racists and xenophobes.
However, British satire sometimes draws on the Scottish flyting match: taunts and vituperation.
Note also the Pythonesque medievalism and black letter type.

Wrote my 30 page final for my Senior Thesis in college on Medievalism in Professional Wrestling at midnight the night before I needed to present it, then read it to a couple hundred people, took questions, and nailed an A.
Wrote the last 18 pages of a paper on Idi Amin as a freshman on an all-nighter, fueled only by Monster energy drinks and Snyder's honey mustard pretzel bits. Due 9 AM, only really got cooking at 10 PM. Got a B+.
I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

Part of my secret origins as a comics scholar was a paper I wrote in late grad school about medievalism in this abortive Swamp Thing arc, so it's pretty neat to find out that it will be published. Very sad that Michael Zulli didn't live to see it.
