Ooooo what's your vibe? Miss Marple and St Mary Meade? Small, trad, excellent china on the hill up to a cathedral? Would you still wear black and white? 😁

This is good, but it's really time Greater Manchester moved to a zonal train fare system, integrated with Metrolink. Given how close Marple and Rose Hill stations are, it's bonkers tickets aren't interchangeable. Hyde North and Flowery Field also.

A huge shake-up of train tickets is on its way - starting in Greater Manchester
The biggest change in decades will see the current 'confusing range' of options removed, meaning cheaper fares for many

I never quite took to her as Marple - the performance was great, but I never quite bought the idea that bumbling chief inspectors and murderous spouses would look at someone like Hickson and think "harmless little old lady"

The 1980 movie version of The Mirror Crack'd is on iplayer right now, featuring Liz Taylor, Geraldine Chaplin, Tony Curtis, Kim Novak, Rock Hudson, and Angela Lansbury as Miss Marple. It is as tonally bizarre as you would expect.

Best Marple ever! Captures the spirit of the books perfectly, and Miss Marple’s astute analysis of people

Still on a mid 80s BBC crime classics tip after #EOD, I watched the first episode of the Joan Hickson MISS MARPLE - JH’s “I have chosen to live my life surrounded by idiots and the price I must pay is solving their murders” performance is great

I grew up in a small town & my experience is that small town corruption is rampant & much harder to combat than city issues. One of my favorite fictional characters is Miss Marple for her clear-eyed view of how much evil can prosper in a small town/county.
“They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys.”
1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.
The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

But you're right, there are so many little gems that aren't Marple or Poirot.

I always feel it’s overlooked by everyone, as it’s isn’t a Poirot or Marple, so always a pleasure to encourage everyone to discover or re-read! I’d love for there to be a decent faithful tv version as well.

Opening Night of the British Film Festival here in Perth. The Choral is an achingly beautiful yet warmly witty film that reminds us how much we need art, poetry, music + each other.
I am nostalgic for Jubilee Church Hall in Marple Bridge and our village plays + concerts!

A series of whodunnits where the sweet little old lady crime writer / amateur detective is actually the perpetrator each time, bumping off someone awful and framing someone equally bad. Miss Marple meets Dexter. We'll call it Murder She Wrought

anyone else sick to death of the ‘troubled detective with secrets’ trope?
i suggest that part of the secret of the enduring success of poirot, marple — and even holmes — is the author’s total lack of interest in their interior lives, & similar lack of ambivalence about the justice of their mission
