Originally using matlab, but it's proprietary and difficult to share. Wanted a solution with higher accessibility and lower maintainability.

Both reviewers & reviewees wanted wide range of reviewers. Should they be interdisciplinary themselves - editors say with current reviewers crisis this isn't possible. You take what you can get.

Bit late to #ManchesterOpenResearch due to traffic…so much for lucky socks BUT it meant I caught @daryloconnor.bsky.social (our @ukrepro.bsky.social lead at UoL) on the radio talking to @claudiahammond.bsky.social…relative sock karma requires further study.
Heading off for day 2 of #ManchesterOpenResearch sporting my lucky* @figshare.com socks

*first time I’ve worn them so could be terribly unlucky 🤷‍♂️

Now talking about interdisciplinary research specifically - much harder to get it published than single discipline work.

Survey rated peer review experiences. Unsurprisingly people who weren't rejected thought it was much better than those who were. But why?

@scurry.bsky.social moving on to talk about 'Excellence' and how it doesn't really mean anything. "You know it when you see it" but lots of the qualities people assign to it support bias, it's easier for some folks than others.

Ooh, 1939 paper quoting 1730 scholarship. I'm guessing we've probably hit the earliest reference at this conference already!

Why @dorassessment.bsky.social exists:

Research needs to be assessed and people want to use quantitative evidence to do so

But many measures now used are flawed or inappropriate

DORA fosters better ways to assess research

Must be open to reviewing what we're doing, understand that the wrong route can be taken, prepared to own.our mistakes.

Pros and cons of 'blinded' peer review (I prefer the term anonymous). Can protect authors from bias, but can also let reviewers be awful.

Alternative is open peer review - which is an umbrella term for a bunch of practices.

Some strategies to help with expertise mismatch - some declined to review, indicate confidence level (although editors said this wasnt helpful), ask for help from colleagues.

Survey showed inconsistent practice, facilitated by double blind review.

Are research reformers too utopian? Do we come across as unrealistic, unreasonable and chasing impossible goals.

Some people in the community are - but others are trying to build a different society which will still have problems.

Off to the Manchester Open Research conference this morning. Lots of great looking talks, and it's nice to not be speaking for once.

Not sure if there's an official hashtag, but I'll be posting content from the event.

@scurry.bsky.social now addressing the "Gold Standard" EO that came out recently.

Weaponisation of open research and some folks have blamed the extreme open folks for creating a space where this could happen. Like Stephen, I didn't really.agree with the opeds he higlighted
