New soil has arrived for a re-run of our XXL lysimeter experiment. After 3 years of measurements we will dismantle 15 of the 20 large lysimeters and fill them with new soil and rock dust. 5 pots will continue for year 4 and 5.

A new study w/ Emily Burt, @scottallenunr.bsky.social, et al. via @aguecohydro.bsky.social made possible by @bafu.admin.ch. We use >3500 lysimeter isotope observations from 47 sites over 3 years to measure how rainfall percolates into soils, with estimates of young water at different soil depths.

In this lysimeter study we studied the impact of using biochars to reduce mobility of PFAS in soil. Over 100 years, nearly all PFOS are predicted to leach from no-sorbent lysimeters, while < 1 % will leach from soil treated with sewage sludge- derived biochar.

Lysimeter Comparison at the UGT Field Site in Müncheberg
Currently, we have two exciting systems being tested side by side, the results are highly promising:
🔹 Ready-To-Go
🔹 Easy-To-Go
Lysimeter.
Conclusion: Both systems deliver comparable evapotranspiration values across all shared parameters
