In the French religious wars (1564/98) this large XVIIc Black Madonna was taken from its hilltop church, carried down to the River Dordogne and thrown in. Recovered later, battered but miraculously intact it was returned. Her right arm is in an interestingly relaxed pose.

Piękny urywek jak i ich łodzie.
Byłem teraz na wakacjach we 🇫🇷 Dordogne. Limeuil to przy ujściu rzeki Vèzerè do Dordogne. Czytałem ich historie w której pisze, że Wikingowie odwiedzali ich w 769 i 845 roku. Oczywiście dokumentnie ich ograbili. Zapewne też po 9mc pojawili się młodzi wikingowie... 😁

#picoftheday today is the pretty village of Limeuil which sits atop a steep hill overlooking the confluence of the #Dordogne & Vézère rivers. Barney and I stopped off here this afternoon en-route to his routine vet appointment. Gorgeous but cold day in this lovely corner of #France

Our route brings us through Limeuil and then across to Belvès, then Monpazier & Villeréal on our way down .. it's part of the Dordogne that we haven't really visited before, so it seemed an ideal opportunity to potter our way through

There was a glassblower's studio and shop right behind the house we rented in Limeuil, France in the early 2000s. I could have stood there for hours watching him and his wife work together. It was like a ballet. It was mesmerizing.

Limeuil, Allés-sur Dordogne et Trémolat. A cool 23/24oC after a couple of months of Canicule, so the dried leaves making it look a bit autumnal after yesterday's wind & rain. As Seen Hy Bike 21.08.2025
