Hanging out in that liminal space between "as far as I know this PCB layout is finished" and "if I stare at it longer I might discover something that's wrong that I can correct before I pay money to have this committed to a physical form".

The enclosures for my new motor controllers for my 100% custom large scale spray painting wall plotter are ready. Everything looks super clean and neat. Really proud here 😊 #maker #3dprinting #plotter #kicad #arduino #robot #hardware #art #motor #stepper

Figuring out KiCAD a bit better now, updated lightning detector PCB. Now with a JST-PH 3-pin connector.

This is kinda fun. #embedded shenanigans. Maybe I should place an order for these.

I found the library, though as long as I get the right footprint, then I am happy. Already making some progress with KiCAD now, so I will likely post an updated pic eventually

Nice. Did you end up creating it yourself or finding a library online? I almost never have to make them myself anymore with how many are available on GitHub and other sources. Still a good thing to know, but definitely much easier to make them when you’re more confident in KiCAD

Do I try to track down this KiCad GAL issue, or just say fuck it, bweh,
January 16, 2026 at 8:52 AM
Some change in the KiCad GAL in nightly causes HW acceleration on my box to fail due to not being able to set up a GLX context, even through KiCad 9 can.

Ugh, i'm exhausted,

Nice circuit! What do you have trouble with in KiCAD? Maybe I can help or point you in the right direction? It’s a solid app.

CAD software that teleports your mouse cursor based on some unhinged rules the old-timers are used to is evil (_cough_ KiCAD)

I can't quite figure out KiCAD (I need to practice more), but LibrePCB got me covered. A little lightning detector sensor, let's gooooo

Another step in my quest for a 31-TET keyboard. These are the first self-designed PCBs I've had manufactured. Still loads to do!

Pour info, en ce moment, KiCad, la solution libre pour faire mumuse en électronique, recherche 128.000€ pour supporter son développement (dev/infra/etc). A vot' bon coeur (le partage équivaut à de l'amour infini en barres de chocolats suisses)

Aight, time to learn some KiCAD, so I can make more lightning sensors, because that's what this world needs more of.

元々JLCPCBのフットプリントライブラリ(EasyEDAのやつ)をKICAD用に変換したのでJLCPCB側のミスな気もする… まあ不注意ではあるので…

Any thoughts from the Mastodon-verse on a good electronics schematic editor to start with? I found https://librepcb.org for example that works for MacOS/Windows/Linux. KiCad is another. https://www.kicad.org

Only advice I'd give is to check how Wayland fares with your software. Some stuff has updated to support it, some have not, and the latter is where you'll hit a lot of pain points, whether it's proprietary like VMware or FOSS like KiCad.

I spoke at KiCon Asia 2025 in Shenzhen about something I'm passionate about: eliminating "learning debt" in electronics education.
KiCad is the only PCB tool you can learn once and use for life—from student projects to commercial products. What do you think?

I have a design for a prototype Life cell PCB, which I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on. At 60 mm square, it's much larger than I want the finished cells to be, but this is still just proof of concept. The real one will probably be 3 boards stacked […]

The idea was to ask you what your first KiCad version was.

Whether 6 or 7.

When I prepared this post, I visited archive.org and looked for kicad.org.

I got two screenshots, from 6.0.6 and 6.0.7.

So, the question had been killed even before I tried to.
