It was my honor to proclaim May 30, 2025, as Ely S. Parker Day in Erie County, and I call upon all residents to remember and honor the life of this remarkable leader whose story is one of courage, perseverance, and unwavering service to both his people and his country. 4/4

Ely Samuel Parker, born Hasanoanda, meaning “Leading Name,” and later known as Donehogawa, “Keeper of the Western Door of the Long House of the Iroquois,” was a Tonawanda Seneca leader of profound wisdom, integrity, and vision whose life left a big mark on both Native American and US history. 2/4

Parker was a trailblazer in every sense—a trained civil engineer, a Union Army officer, and the military secretary to General Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War, playing a critical role at Appomattox in drafting the terms of Confederate surrender, and helping to bring the war to its end. 3/4

Yesterday, our community marked the 120th anniversary of the unveiling of Ely Parker’s grave marker at Forest Lawn. This initiative was spearheaded by Erie County Historical Commission Commissioner Melissa Leonard, a descendant of Ely Parker. 1/4
