OMG. Also I recently read about her advocacy for people with HIV/AIDS in the early days of the AIDS crisis and I was floored. People who stuck their necks out for the community back then are absolute angels in my book.

6/9 What’s happening in Maine?
A state facing a record HIV outbreak — people getting sick, dying — asked for help.
It’s still waiting.
🙄 Excuse offered: “the shutdown.”
But former CDC directors say Epi-Aids have gone out during shutdowns.
So what’s different this time — and who made that call? 🤔

Besides the fact that people just casually used slurs, and in the 80s, let people die of AIDS, and could have kept it out of the blood system before there was an HIV test by testing for hepatitis, which also would keep hepatitis out, this happened

The efficacy of drugs for known diseases is a great example of this. To take one famous instance, treatments for HIV and AIDS. Hence the old joke from South Park about treating AIDS by injecting money into your bloodstream.
Cost in 1987? 33 thousand dollars per year.
Cost in 2021? Lifetime $420 k.

I’m old enough to remember how terrifying HIV/Aids was when first publicised. It is a tribute to science & campaigning that it is no longer a death sentence. May you see many, many more years.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UNAIDS has led the global fight against HIV/AIDS for 25+ years, and ending it early would destroy decades of progress.
I led 36 Members of Congress urging the UN to reverse this decision and continue the fight to end HIV & AIDS.

I would call Ben a hack, I'd call him biased, I'd call him a grifter who pivoted to anti-trans journalism because HIV/AIDS work was drying up, but I would not call him an activist outside of scare quotes.

This post is my tribute to a person who bravely stood by people like me who were cast out by society, by the governments of the day, and often by families and friends; whose supported for people living with HIV/AIDS continued unwaveringly throughout the years, nothing else.
Please respect that.

The queer community’s response to HIV and aids ought to have taught the public and politicians about queer power. Look at the work that was done. Look at where we are today. That is the power of queer community.

9/ We don't have to live in a world with AIDS.
Or where NYers get tax breaks to give money to the Israeli military to go blow up Palestinian children.
Or where pols raise the rent on rent controlled ppl.
We can do peer to peer education to reduce HIV.
Our representatives CAN oppose Israel!

Yep. I have ignorant children in my class who think he "got cured" through some "natural healing" charlatan. Convincing them that it was SCIENCE that kept him alive is an uphill battle. But Magic changed the "reputation" of HIV/AIDS.

If more of the MAGA women were like Tammy, we wouldn’t be here. She interviewed a gay man who had HIV and said it was monstrous that Christians wouldn’t care for AIDS patients. All she really wanted to do was sing and make people happy.
