I guess I’m notso good at clearing out old stuff, but took a stab at it, today. I found a favourite wallet I’ve been missing. There was no cash in it, but I found cards for Future Shop, Sears, HBC, Blockbuster, and Video Difference (for those from Halifax who remember).

Pence is just wrong. Hudson’s Bay Company was not a band of plucky adventurous upstarts fighting the bureaucratic state! Prince Rupert introduced HBC to his cousin, King Charles II, who financed them. The King then granted them a monopoly. HBC was funded and protected by the Crown!

4 of 5 HBC voted to cease: in major part due to the onerous conditions in the new lease. £2k a year rent seems good, but City Properties insisted on a list of repairs that would require HBC to have a revenue of £100s of thousands a year to keep up. They would have known this was not feasible.

Blankets have important cultural significance in several Indigenous nations, and beyond that the instance of "small pox blankets" happened in the US by their army, afaik the HBC or Canadian government never used that specific tactic in Canada.
