The Flemish masters painted on #copper as it provided a smooth surface that allowed fine detail and durability of their exquisite works, like this self portrait of Rembrandt.

Naturally occurring pure copper is called “native” copper & is formed in veins & fractures by super-heated mineral-rich fluids often associated with volcanic activity. My sample shown below. Get the lead out & vote #copper!

Remember dendrites (from the Greek word dendron meaning tree)? They are tree-like minerals that form under special conditions. There is a lovely dendritic #copper sample on the upper right. Thanks Susie! More in comment 👇🏼

Michigan has historically been a source for beautiful, and useful, #copper. Specifically, the Upper Peninsula contains the largest native copper deposits!

Copper from Carnegie Natural History and Cranbrook Institute.

Vote copper for Michigan!

#OreCup is starting at 00:00 GMT!

The posts are scheduled and the spreadsheets are waiting. But will all our fancy scheduling survive timezones AND clock changes? Only a few hours until we find out! 😂

#Palestine is eligible for support: "We believe that the adoption of this new policy offers more concrete support to Palestine than issuing a statement with no further actions".

Thank you for that, European Geosciences Union (EGU @egu.eu)

Dugie was a friend and mentor to me, and to countless
Edinburgh geosciences students.

He inspired @annebrusatte.bsky.social and me to write a children's' book on Scottish dinosaurs called...Dugie the Dinosaur! And he took such a liking to our wee Scottish boy Anthony.

Just got a what's app from a friend in the geosciences who had a collaborative grant proposal rejected with one reason being there were "too many women involved." Location: northern Europe.

In case you were thinking "educated" scientists were necessarily less shitty about these sorts of things.

Yes, he and I are astrophysicists, not planetary scientists.

[The categories are not mutually exclusive, and not cleanly defined. Generally, planetary scientists have training/experience in geosciences and/or observational techniques for Solar System objects.]
