A criminal court in Dakar has convicted Senegalese opposition politician Ousmane Sonko, who is also a candidate for the 2024 presidential election, to two years in prison. He was found guilty of "corrupting young people" by the court but acquitted of rape. Ndèye Khady Ndiaye, the proprietor of the beauty parlour where Sonko was charged with repeatedly abusing a female employee, was also given a two-year prison term along with Sonko. Supporters of Sonko contend that the case against him is politically motivated, causing serious splits within Senegal, which has resulted in numerous protests.
