#FishBase
Ichthyologist Fang Fang Kullander would have been 63 years old today. She travelled the globe for her taxonomical studies of freshwater fish and her work with Fishbase, but passed away at the age of 47 in 2010 from gall duct cancer.

The taxonomy is mostly based on Fishbase, so we know that the scientific names are accurate (some bugs remain - just spotted Arripis georgianus, which should be Arripis georgiana)

calling on aquamaps, fishbase, and worms to curate species sightings automatically so we don't display the *really* wrong ones.
The phylogeny is a merger of several public phylogenies while placing 'unplaced' species with the species' relatives MRCA. code and merged phylogeny here:

Underlying the sightings is automated curation of species sightings based on Aquamaps and Fishbase, we're erring on the side of caution; species detected but not supported in the area are not included.

“Each name reveals how important that fish is to a community.” –Dr. Deng Palomares, FishBase pioneer

From ulchen to sgaagaay, fish names reflect deep ties between people and the sea. With 320,000+ names in 350+ languages, FishBase is preserving both science & heritage.

Experimenting with using LLMs to write entire R packages from code I've written elsewhere. Here's a #eDNA package that takes sightings and compares with Aquamaps, their BLAST identities, fishbase/AFD and tells you how likely this hit is (currently only 4 categories)

Is #icanhazpdf a thing here? I'm looking for "La base de données GICIM: Gestion informatisée des collections ichthyologiques du Muséum". FishBase cites the book's 3-page appendix II for size data, but there's no data at all in there. I suspect they're throughout the whole book...?

We replaced the way LCAs are calculated - we now rely on Fishbase taxonomy first, then WoRMS and NCBI - and have added FAIRe-standard-aligned output files
