In a recent interview at the historic Neir’s Tavern 87-48 78th St, Woodhaven, NY 11421 in Queens, Executive Director of the Union Labor Advisory Network, Mike Fina, spoke with Loycent Gordon, owner of the 196-year-old landmark and a proud advocate for the unionized construction industry, public sector workers, and U.S. veterans. Loycent—a retired FDNY lieutenant, small business owner, and proud supporter of the trades—shared the story behind saving Neir’s Tavern from closing its doors 16 years ago. For him, keeping this 196-year-old working-class establishment alive was about more than preserving a bar—it was about protecting the soul of America. With deep family roots in the trades, including a brother in Ironworkers Local 580, Loycent sees Neir’s as a home for union workers, veterans, and community members who represent the backbone of this country. Though Neir’s Tavern is famous for its scenes in Goodfellas and other films, Loycent emphasized that the real heart of the bar is the working men and women who gather there—people dedicated to building our cities, serving our communities, and supporting one another. His continuing commitment to veterans, especially those transitioning into union careers, reflects his belief in giving back to those who have given so much.
