As of 20th Sept., the last arch of the lowest lying (~900 m asl) permanent firn ice deposit in the Alpine region collapsed too!
Such total disappearance never happened in recent history... 😱

2022-2025 ice caps across Edgoya, Svalbard lost all snow cover, resulting all firn cover being lost too. This removes ability of meltwater to refreeze. In 2025 we again see this playing out on the ice caps of Edgeøya. @yogaski.bsky.social @willharcourt.bsky.social glacierchange.blog/2025/09/11/s...

Stonebreen an ice cap on Edgeoya, Svalbard in recent years has lost nearly all snow/firn cover, retaining no accumulation. This has led to retreat from 2020-2025, indicated on the false color Sentinel images. The bare ice surface is darker and can no longer retain any meltwater.

Since the early 1980s, Vernagtferner has lost mass at an above-average rate compared to other glaciers, largely due to the disappearance of its firn body, which is essential for glacial growth. This loss of ice integrity could lead to the glacier breaking into smaller, disconnected parts.

Glaciers store much of Earths freshwater in frozen AND liquid form. Many such as the Juneau Icefield (JIF) store water within its pore spaces year-round. Here is a firn core extracted from the JIF draining water. We are mapping aquifers across the JIF to estimate how much water is stored! 🧪

Amazing GPR (25,100,500MHz) and TEM fieldwork with the Glaciology Course at Unis Svalbard. We mapped out temperate ice, a possible firn aquifer, ice thickness, firn thickness and extent and snow thickness over Drønbreen. Fantastic learning opportunities. Thankful 😌🙏 now looking forward to the data📊

Hello! 👋 I’m Mike MacFerrin, a research scientist at U Colorado. I study the ways ice sheets interact with water (glacial hydrology) and the ways all that’s changing in a warming climate.
