HOWEVER, being at peace with this kind of thing ("i'm not too much, the right people will come") involves a comfort with rejection which it took me many years of trauma therapies including EMDR and DBT to come to terms with. It isn't just a coat people can slip on easily, which is frustrating!

I know the science isn't all the way there but people talk about EMDR like it's a genuine miracle and even if that's entirely placebo, placebo is powerful, man. Honestly I feel like I've been in rem sleep for 20 years, just stuck, can't move, having nightmares.

it's retraumatization at its core. it's not desensitization, not when samus is still very much in danger. fighting ridley over and over again is not exposure therapy, it's not EMDR, it's not cognitive processing therapy, it's not acceptance and commitment therapy. it's retraumatization.

Last time I tried EMDR I wasn't fully aware of what all "counted" as trauma that I could focus on since most of my trauma is little things kinda sprinkled throughout my life but I think I have a much firmer grasp on my past now and what I can try to rearrange in my head

Cuz nowadays the good, competent psychiatrists AND psychologists don't take insurance, cost $250-500 for the initial intake session & $125-300 per visit AND have a full practice with a waiting list? That's based on lived experience navigating ANY adjustments w/ medication & EMDR Trauma Therapy

EMDR is ordinary trauma therapy with distraction. Currently flavour of the therapy month but that’ll pass. Just get a good therapist cos meta studies suggest it’s no more effective than any other therapy

This made me cry. What you are doing is incredible. I went through 32 EMDR sessions a week apart and it would physically wipe me out for days. Its not mind work like therapy, its brain work. You are rewiring your brain. It is so worth it and life altering. YOU are amazing & YOU are a gift.

I didn’t even think they did EMDR virtually and not in person.

Not my therapist suggesting EMDR 😂

It was only a matter of time before she suggested that if I'm being honest with myself.

I separated in October of 2023. I have been seeking in-person therapy for EMDR through the VA ever since then. They do everything they can to obfuscate and prevent. I have an open VA OIG complaint, but there has been no action.

This morning's therapy: turns out I don't have depression, which is a huge relief. 👍 So we go straight to EMDR therapy for working on flashbacks issues. In the meantime, I'll keep practicing mindfulness and positive memories reprogramming until not needed anymore. 🙂 It's already helping a lot.

Seconding all of this muchly. An old therapist of mine was employed by the city to do EMDR for any first responders right away post-trauma so they could head off PTSD at the pass.

The advantage of getting something like EMDR and using emotive journaling techniques alongside a therapist familiar with PTSD earlier rather than later is there are good outcomes when it’s done in the weeks post event rather than the months or years post event. I am sorry you had such an experience

I know EMDR is supposed to dig up a lot of repressed stuff… but ladies, ladies, one at a time!

I cancelled therapy tomorrow. I’ve been doing EMDR on multiple incident CPTSD for two years straight with almost no breaks. I have no voice. I’m running a fever. I still feel guilty for calling off.

Maybe another therapy topic. 😅

Yes it's a tempting metaphor and yes some people are too damaged to change.
But a dramatic life event like rehab or the death of an abusive parent can be a catalyst for insight and malleability. Also trauma therapies like DBT and EMDR can reshape neural pathways.
