Many parts of the Eastern U.S. continued to dry out with some mixed areas of improvement across the country. Drought (D1-D4) covered 43.41% of the contiguous U.S., an increase of 2.6 points.

Drought continued to expand in the eastern U.S. with some pockets of drought improvement across the country. Drought (D1-D4) coverage increased by 1.18 points to encompass 35.9% of the contiguous U.S.

US Drought Monitor class change map comparing conditions from August 12 to August 5. Drought worsened in much of the Northeast this week, as well as parts of the Midwest, Lower Mississippi Valley, southern Plains and the West.

Drought improved in parts of an area from the Idaho panhandle extending through Montana and North Dakota into northwest Minnesota.

Mixed conditions occurred in parts of the Southeast, High Plains, Alaska and Puerto Rico.

US Drought Monitor class change map comparing conditions from April 8 to April 1. Following recent severe weather events, lots of improvements can be seen on the map this week, including parts of the Northeast, Southeast, South, Midwest and High Plains. Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Alabama also had areas of two-category improvements.

Mixed conditions occurred in the West, with degradations in the Four Corners states and Montana. Degradations also occurred in North Dakota and Hawaii.

Drought intensified in parts of the Pacific Northwest and North Dakota and eased in pockets of the north central US, Texas and Florida. Drought covered 30.03% of the continental US, up from 29.91% last week.

Drought conditions have developed rapidly over the past month in parts of the Northeast and lower Midwest where shades of orange indicate that drought has worsened by two or three categories.

US Drought Monitor class change map comparing conditions from June 24 to June 17. Degradations occurred across parts of the Pacific Northwest, plus western Montana and northern Nevada and Utah. Puerto Rico and Alaska also saw degradations. Mixed conditions occurred in parts of the High Plains, Midwest, Texas, Florida and Hawaii. US Drought Monitor class change map comparing conditions from July 15 to July 8. Drought continues to worsen in the West, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Alaska also saw more degradations this week, with a small area of improvement. Drought improved in Texas (with an area of two-category improvement) and the Mid-Atlantic. The Southeast saw scattered degradations with some improvement in the Florida Peninsula. Parts of the Midwest, High Plains and Hawaii saw mixed conditions.

The drought footprint in the US shrank over the past week after a storm system brought extreme weather and heavy rains. Drought (D1-D4) covers 38.47% of the contiguous US this week, a drop of 4.9 pts from last week.
