The December Comfort Watches series continues tonight with... Dredd?!? Yes! Dredd! Which presents us with a horrible place to live that you would probably never want to visit, and yet makes it entirely watchable:

The December Comfort Watches 2025, Day Five: Dredd
I think it’s important to note, when writing a series of essays about “comfort watches,” that not every movie on that list is going to be a comfortable watch. Some of them might e…

I need 2 things from Hollywood, and yes, I am willing to beg for them:

1. We need another “Dredd” with Karl Urban as Judge Dredd

2. Retcon Alien: Covenant and give Prometheus a proper sequel

I am manifesting this reality. It must happen

John Wagner: In my comic I created Judge Dredd as a cautionary tale

The US Government: At long last, we have created Judge Dredd from the classic comic series Don't Create Judge Dredd

I mean the Dredd Scott decision basically sparked the civil war, which the US won and then enacted birthright citizenship to reject Dredd Scott, so getting rid of it is just a reembracing of race being the basis of class and a bunch of other racist bullshit.

Like we fought the civil war about this
without birthright citizenship in the united states, you don't have a democracy and you don't have rule of law.

revoking birthright citizenship gives fascists free rein to purge the country of literally anyone they don't like. it opens the door to atrocities and mass murder. i am not exaggerating.

In today’s episode of People Who Think Judge Dredd Is An Instruction Manual And Not A Warning, the US Department of Homeland Security thinks Judge Dredd is an instruction manual and not a warning. And not even the good Judge Dredd, either.

Dredd not getting a sequel is where the film industry went wrong

I don't think there's any bigger indictment of Dredd as a media property than the fact that they knew early on that audiences saw him as aspirational, wrote the America arc to try and correct it (did nothing) and now America's daughter is a judge who is perfectly fine with Judge Dredd.

Dredd is satire but it’s also kayfabe, if you were to pick up a random Prog it is not necessarily the case you would come away thinking “aha a satire on fascism”, you do not have to be a big 2000AD fan to realise there are a lot of people who just really like seeing Dredd do his thing
2000AD people getting mad at Judge Dredd being used in US DoJ recruitment ads is interesting. Dredd belongs to a huge swathe of popular media that I call 'having your cake and eating it'. The ostensible theme is satirizing fascism; the actual reason people read it is the drama and the megaviolence

like, i know republican cultural literacy is terrible, but the extremely online groyper who chose to use this image rather that one from the alex gardner DREDD did so because they knew it would aggravate you if you know the difference

obviously the judges of judge dredd are bad and are not meant to be aspirational, but also hey maybe look up what the judges did to the american president.

ICE misuses pop-culture images of characters like Judge Dredd for two reasons, the first is to attract illiterate tub thumping goons and the second is to irritate people like me, and I've decided the least I can do is not help them with goal two
