Lucy maakt de eerste beelden van asteroïde Dinkinesh

De kleine hoofdgordel asteroïde (152830) Dinkinesh werd recent aan de Lucy-missie toegevoegd en zal op 1 november 2023 als eerste worden bezocht.

Ok, let's try a mixed scenario: Dinkinesh forms, it has a bigger & single moon initially, and another asteroid wanders by and goes SMASH! into the moon. Does this split Dinkinesh I into a moon moon & lose bits?
Well...this was tried for Haumea's moons, and it's also hard. Doesn't generally match

@ABC: Dinkinesh, the little asteroid visited by NASA’s Lucy spacecraft this week, had a big surprise for scientists — a mini moon. https://t.co/q19pjBmFMW

but WAIT! are they in contact or not? or... were the moonlets orbiting each other before they made contact while orbiting dinkinesh? is that situation unstable? is contacting a way to become more stable?

and should thes guys be called double-dinki-dinkinesh?

109. ETHIOPIA

The story of the discovery of AL 288-1 (AKA Lucy, and Dinkʼinesh (Amharic for "You are marvelous")) -- the oldest, best-preserved skeleton of any erect-walking human ancestor (specifically, Australopithecus afarensis) found -- in 1974 in Hadar, Ethiopia.

Today on How on Earth #KGNU, we talk with Dr. Simone Marchi about #NASA's #LucyMission to the Trojan asteroids. On its way, Lucy has flybys of two main-belt asteroids: Dinkinesh in November 2023 and next on April 20 it will fly by asteroid Donaldjohanson. howonearthradio.org/archives/10036

presumably Selam was a binary moon of Dinkinesh at some point? so they were moonmoons of each other?

2.2 AU from the Sun, the Lucy space probe flew 425 km from minor planet (152830) Dinkinesh at 1654 UTC Nov 1. Lucy now continues in solar orbit for another Earth gravity assist in Dec 2024 before heading back out to the Main Belt and beyond.

New color image of the asteroid Dinkinesh and its moon Selam from the Lucy mission flyby.

Dinkinesh is the Ethiopian name of the fossil nicknamed "Lucy". Selam (ሰላም) or “peace” in Amharic, is an Ethiopian fossil of a 3-year-old girl of the same species as Lucy 🔭🧪

Dinkinesh, "you are marvellous" in Amharic.

We saw her at the National Museum in Addis Ababa. I remembered a surprising amount from the high school archeology elective that I loved and horrified my family members by semi-shouting things like, "Oh my gosh it's Homo Habiliis!!"
