On a black background, a bright red spot with a white core appears at center. The spot, which is the asteroid Didymos-Dimorphos system after impact from NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft, has 8 red diffraction spikes extending out from its center. Also surrounding the asteroid is a haze of bright red light with wispy tendrils extending outward.

Results from DART:
Changed the orbit by 33 minutes, measured a beta of 3.6, have a 3D model (and lots of cool images) of the ejecta.

Kinetic impact is very efficient way to redirect an asteroid, especially since most asteroids are very loosely bound, like Didymos/Dimorphos and Benu.
DART Pre-impact orbital period 11 hours, 55 minutes. Post Impact orbital period 11 hours, 22 minutes. Illustration of the orbit of Dimorphos (150 meters) around Didymos (760 meters), with the original wider orbit and new closter orbit. Four scenraios for kinetic impact: No ejecta, momentum factor =1, some ejecta, DART ejecta, momentum factor ~3.6, Lots of ejecta.

First it's Raducan et al. with "Physical properties of asteroid Dimorphos as derived from the DART impact." This paper includes simulations of the DART impact into Dimorphos, with indications that Dimorphos' surface is very weak and that DART likely reshaped it!

Edited Abstract: On 26 September 2022, NASA’s DART mission successfully impacted Dimorphos, the natural satellite of the binary near-Earth asteroid (65803) Didymos. Numerical simulations of the impact provide a means to find the surface material properties and target structures that are consistent with the observations. Our simulation that best matches the observations indicates that Dimorphos is weak, with a cohesive strength of less than a few pascals, like asteroids (162173) Ryugu and (101955) Bennu. We find that the bulk density of Dimorphos is lower than ~2,400 kg/m3 and that it has a low volume fraction of boulders (≲40 vol%) on the surface and in the shallow subsurface. These findings suggest that Dimorphos is a rubble pile that might have formed through rotational mass shedding and reaccumulation from Didymos. Our simulations indicate that the DART impact caused global deformation and resurfacing of Dimorphos. ESA’s upcoming Hera mission may find a reshaped asteroid.

Hera is on its way to Dimorphos - a small moon of asteroid Didymos. The other spacecraft - DART - smashed to this moon few years ago to test, if we can (unlike dinosaurs) defend ourselves against the asteroid impact!
