“When the migrants began to arrive by the thousands by bus in 2022, New Life responded. As DeMateo told me, buses full of migrants would arrive from Texas, dropping off people in random spots around the city. New Life opened a warehouse for emergency supplies, created a “landing zone” to welcome new arrivals, and helped put 6,000 people in furnished apartments.”

I was eating breakfast at Nuevo León when ICE descended on Little Village. It began at 26th and Kedzie with multiple arrests and a chaotic scene. Agents then sped through the neighborhood, driving recklessly and sowing fear. At 11:09 AM, ten ICE vehicles stopped at 26th and Pulaski. Chaos erupted. Flash bangs exploded. I watched as Bovino pulled the pin on a grenade-right in front of me. Moments later, they headed west down 26th Street toward Cicero. I turned into the Sam's Club entrance and came across a young family with a one-year-old baby. They had been pepper-sprayed. We helped them flush their eyes. They told me they were simply shopping when they heard honking and saw a helicopter overhead. As ICE agents drove past, they sprayed a large canister of pepper spray directly into their car—where their one-year-old baby and 16-year-old sister sat inside. All U.S. citizens. Completely unprovoked. We got the family to Lawndale Christian Health Center for care and support. Once again, ICE has brought chaos to our community —attacking families and traumatizing children. We're walking with this family and continuing the work. We will keep standing against injustice. We continue to call on everyone to not take the bait and react with violence. Pray for Little Village. Pray for Chicago. Our community continues to rise-together.
