Recalling his days working as a state prosecutor when Massachusetts voted in 2008 to decriminalize marijuana, Kennedy said the decision affected the ability of police officers to search and seize other illegal items, such as guns, from vehicles. “If you smelled [marijuana] in a car, you could search a car,” Kennedy said. “When it became decriminalized, you couldn’t do that.”

mhm! theyre dismantling our rights with language and arguments we handed them. if you compare with previous movements, the contrast is pretty stark. like the gay rights movement, for all its faults, was pretty unrelenting wrt demands to decriminalize gay sex and legalize gay marriage

It was cut in June IIRC, when it was refashioned as a transit reform bill in a bid to save time.

We still desperately need that bill to decriminalize what a vast majority of road users already are doing, while clarifying responsibility in case of crashes.

The previous night, Cuomo's campaign had briefly posted a disturbing, ultra-racist Al-generated video that showed, as The New York Times notes, "Mamdani's supporters as trespassers, domestic abusers, pimps, drug dealers and drunken drivers, and showing a Black shoplifter in a kaffiyeh." In the video, a seemingly 1970s-era Black pimp shows the back of his van, which is filled with young, white sex workers. The video also shows Mamdani eating rice with his hands—a clear invocation of a far-right anti-Mamdani trope that has surfaced during the election. During Wednesday's mayoral debate, Cuomo explicitly tried to create a wedge between Sunni and Shia Muslims, saying, "To Zohran, I believe you have been a divisive force in New York, and I believe that's toxic energy for New York. In 2020 a crowded field of dem presidential candidates moved left on immigration, many calling to decriminalize unauthorized border entry, calling to end 3- and 10- year bars.

I wish Ezra had provided the evidence that the Democratic Party has moved “sharply left” on this laundry list of issues. To take one example, they pitched the IRA as a climate bill but also as a way of rebooting manufacturing, particularly in red states. And how have they moved left on “guns”?
But the working class feels unrepresented by Democrats in a broader way—left behind and looked down upon by a party that moves sharply left on culture, on climate, on guns, on immigration. A party that doesn’t talk like them—and doesn’t like the way they talk.
