#ClassicsTober23 8: Icarus
A devastating myth of a father and son and the tragedy of loss. This painting ‘The Lament for Icarus’ by Herbert James Draper (1898) reimagines the grief at the heart of this myth.

ClassicsTober23 Day 9: I thought I'd add this one for good measure today. I was very taken by it when it first emerged from somewhere or other. It was the shortest time in which I ever wrote a sonnet - came out pretty much in one go, fully formed.

Surprising lack of Persephone in Pompeii, considering Ceres had a named priestess (CIL X 812, 1036, 1074 a-b), largely b/c of preservation. But she was included in the street shrine of 12 gods at IX.11.1, dressed in red with a gold modius on her head. #Classicstober23 day 7. 🏺
