Excessive water usage is a killer for sensitive #chalkstreams.

Average consumption per capita in the Southeast of England is 143 litres per day.

But we can all do better. Looking at my account tho...

Little timeliness cleanser to show I'm not made up solely of swear words.
Winchester chalkstreams smell like fruit drops right now.
Ripe wild blackberries and warm tansy fill the air.
A small pale blonde cockapoo with fluffy tail curled up behind looks towards something across the country path beyond the wooden planks that make up the crossing over a stream. Willow branches lean inwards above lush wild hedgerow where the scent of ripe blackberries fermenting in the warm end of summer.

Last weekend, we hosted a day of stream-dipping as part of the Hughenden National Trust Summer of Play on the globally-rare Hughenden chalk stream. We dipped in the lush vegetation, uncovering hundreds of minibeasts!

Light gone by time I was ready to leave ministrations of the Minnows at base of new #fish pass at Turf Lock Mildenhall & visibility of River Lark poor compared to the #chalkstreams to the north, but realised another benefit of fish pass was pool beneath it, full of large fish including Perch. 15/17

At end of long day on laptop/zoom etc, so lucky to be able to take dip in my local river, the Lark, one of world's 200+ #chalkstreams, most of which are in England. Good too, to know many are taking action, such as creating this new #fish pass, to improve the health of this struggling river. 14/17

Besides the Gudgeon, Minnows and baby Perch that enjoy the new Environment Agency/BFER #fish pass to help trout migration on the River Lark at Turf Lock, Mildenhall, there was also a Grey Wagtail very much at home, here having caught a worm. #WestSuffolk #Suffolk #BirdsSeenIn2025 #chalkstreams 6/17
