#CUSMA’s
I think CUSMA’s dead, and I believe our PM thinks so too. We need a different agreement (since we can’t completely divorce ourselves from trade with the US). I want Carney to push very hard for that post-NATO coalition among mid powers he referenced at Davos.

CUSMA’s Article 32.10 gives the US a "soft veto" over Canada’s trade. If Canada signs a deal with a "non-market economy" like China, the US can terminate CUSMA. Since 75%+ of Canadian exports go south, Canada can't risk losing US market access for a China deal. #CUSMA #Trade

4/5 The warning signs are already flashing.

Stellantis cautioned back in November that without CUSMA's regional rules, American vehicles would lose market share to Asian imports.

The irony is sharp: tearing up the deal to save jobs might actually hand the advantage to overseas rivals.

The white knuckle crowd needs to bear in mind that whilst Trump's new 35% bully-boy tariffs against Canada will indeed be troublesome, more than 90% of our trade with the US is still exempt from tariffs under CUSMA (a.k.a. USMCA in the US) if the goods meet CUSMA's rules of origin provisions.

Armed with CUSMA's tariff shield, Canada uses quiet defiance against US pressure. Ottawa's strategy of calm preparation is proving more powerful than Washington's loud, deadline-driven tactics.

Why Canada Is Not Afraid of American Tariffs
As an August 1st deadline looms, Canada has chosen calculated patience over panicked agreements. This quiet defiance reveals the limits of America’s tariff strategy and a new chapter in global trade.

"With new tariff threats against MFN status, what is the process producers need to qualify for CUSMA?"

"Oh, right. The process. The process for CUSMA. The process chosen especially to implement CUSMA. CUSMA's process."

"[Stuart Trew, a senior researcher with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives] said the feds could use CUSMA’s escape clause to cancel the agreement, although he’d be concerned that Canada’s business community would attempt to stage a coup."

Canada’s unions met with Minister Leblanc today with one clear message ahead of #CUSMA’s review: workers must come first.

Trade cannot weaken jobs, public services, or our ability to build a strong, domestic economy. No deal is better than a bad deal.

As far as adjustments in Canada's counter tariffs and ongoing negotiations: CUSMA 2026 is the end game. Canada is benefitting from the current CUSMA agreement, to the point where we have the lowest US tariff impacts on our exports of any country. We need to reinforce CUSMA's value to both countries.

There's absolutely NO deal with the US that would favor us in ANY way!CUSMA's toilet paper, we need to trash it ASAP, tell the Americans to fuck off & sign another agreement with Mexico. We free trade with Mexico & tariff trade with the Americans(russians). #Canada #US

This new MLI paper is a non-starter for Trump—on almost every point.

He doesn't want our energy or automobiles.

He won't strengthen CUSMA's dispute process.

He doesn't care if he's wrong about trade deficits.

Very few CDNS would like this "bargain."
