The share of California CSHCN who missed 11 or more school days in the previous year due to illness or injury was 19%—around 5.5 times higher than the share of children without special health care needs.

Although a vast majority of children with special health care needs (CSHCN) in CA (96%) were consistently insured in 2022—meaning they were covered during all 12 months of the prior year—only 59% of CSHCN had *adequate* health insurance, compared w 71% of children without special health care needs.

When sick, California CSHCN covered only by public health insurance were more likely to use the emergency room or to have no usual source of care (25%) than those w private insurance (14%). Privately insured CSHCN are more likely to have a doctor’s office or usual source of care to turn to when ill.

Children w special health care needs (CSHCN) are more likely to have multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) than their peers. The share of CSHCN who have experienced 4+ ACEs is more than 5X that of children without special health care needs.
