The discovery of a 1,000kg German bomb on Southsea seafront yesterday was pretty dramatic but hardly surprising. Between July 1940 and July 1944 1,378 bombs are known to have been dropped on Portsmouth #Portsmouth #Southsea #Blitz #WW2 #Blitz80

That's just the ones that were recorded and reported by Air Raid Precautions - in all likelihood the figure was much higher. And in the bomb map that was produced after the war, only high explosive bombs were plotted #Portsmouth #Southsea #Blitz #WW2 #Blitz80

Almost two thirds of the bombs recorded were of an 'unknown' type - in the records submitted to the government, only five SC1000 were recorded as landing on Portsmouth #Portsmouth #Southsea #Blitz #WW2 #Blitz80

Given how frenetic air raids were, its not surprising that occasionally the odd unrecorded bomb is found. And although ARP may have seen a bomb land, it would have been very difficult, almost impossible to record what kind of bomb it was #Portsmouth #Southsea #Blitz #WW2 #Blitz80
