#TurretTuesday Chicago's Austin neighborhood

Benjamin Wikoff House, 5939 W. Race. 1895, Oliver Smith, architect. From the AIA Guide to Chicago, 3rd edition: "The picturesque tower and gambrel dormer pierce the gambrel roof of this large but snug Queen Anne." A large open porch extends across 2/3 of the house. It is frame construction with turquoise siding, and dark turquoise, yellow, and white trim.

Thomas J. Langford House, 621 N. Central Ave. Built in 1895, the architect is unknown but I really think it must be Frederick Schock, right? It's a huge Queen Anne frame home with a deep, wide porch and an amazing turret on the left. The turret is round and extends up from the ground, past the main roof, ending in a conical roof, a band of copper? trim, a much smaller cone-shaped doodad, topped with a copper finial. The third level of the turret has amazing round-headed windows all the way around. The siding is oxblood red with off white trim.

5850 W. Race was built in 1901, John Chubb, architect. It is of frams construction with the turret at the left, topped with a flared pointed roof. A quaint gable projects from the hipped roof at the front. A wide and deep porch extends across the entire width of the house, supported by smooth Doric columns. The siding is light yellow and the trim is white.

Near the end of the story the sheep break into a deafening chorus of “Four legs good, two legs better.” They went on for five minutes, during which the pigs walked briefly around and then returned to the farmhouse.... Clover goes to the gable wall and brings Benjamin with her. She asks Benjamin to read for her what is on the gable wall. All the commandments are gone, and all that is written there now is:

“All animals are equal, But some animals are more equal than others.”

The thing is, that schtick would always work. A fan can pull up footage of them doing the shit for real in the Olympics.

Brad Rheingans and Bob Backlund were before them. They had Benjamin, Haas and Angle strong all at the same time.
