Just got the Nagoya NA701 (genuine) for the Baofeng UV-5R Mini. Will try it out later to see the difference in receive signal.
Interesting that it’s a £19 aerial (including delivery) for a £20 radio!
More suitable than the usual NA771 as it is only around 150mm in length.

I played POTA radio today on SSB QRP. My microphone sounds awful on the other end, I think, and it's one of the two things that I truly despise about the (tr)uSDX. (It's not the built in mic, it's a modified Baofeng and something isn't right...) But I played in pileups and survived....

I've now used the Radioddity GD-88 and found it quite a bit worse than the Baofeng. For a budget first DMR I'd go Baofeng DM-1701, then flash to OpenGD77 firmware. After that it's a pretty good radio especially for ~$75. If budget isn't an issue, Anytone 878 ($330) seems to be popular.

2 out of every 5 Baofeng Radio-Bikes work as soon as you start riding them.
No. 3 works OK at first, but after a while, the front wheel will randomly lock up and throw you over the handlebars.
No. 4 and 5 won't work at all but their fans will say, "they're so cheap, you can just buy another one"

If you have a ham license, what radio do you want? Broadly speaking, depending on your budget, you have three options: (1) a very cheap Baofeng or similar Chinese-made handheld ("HT") radio, or (2) a mid-range, higher-quality radio from a better-known brand, or (3) something fancy.

If you're going the GMRS route the Baofeng UV-5G lets you have a UV-5R except it's actually legal and still very cheap

For local comms you can get a baofeng radio online cheap for $25 or so. For your first HF radio better to plug into a club and a used one will probably manifest along with expertise in setting it up with power supply and antenna.
