This Gen Xer recalls the miracle of learning the "ATM0" command to turn off the modem's speaker, allowing me to do what I called "sneak BBSing" after my folks were asleep when I was a teen. I'd sneak to the computer room & dial in and post on "the boards" as one did. Quietly.

#OldPosting
I had no idea dial-up still existed.

Fellow elder millennials, this is for you. 🫶🏽

While you were checking your phone, this guy was logging into a BBS on a portable CP/M-based computer with an eight-line non-backlit display. https://bytecellar.com/2018/04/14/modern-day-bbsing-on-the-epson-px-8-cp-m-laptop-circa-1984/

Retrocomputing enthusiast Niels Haedecke joins the show. We talk about his telnet/SSH access Wintermute BBS, FidoNet, the RC2014 Z-80 CP/M computer and the telnet BBS he's running on it, the Forth programming language, and the My4th Computer.

Who says you need a giant monitor to dive into the retro #BBSing?

Southern AMIS BBS an #Atari 130XE—and we’re connected in style on the Sinclair MTV1, Casio Color TV, and the classic Sony Watchman. Micro TVs, mega nostalgia.

I think I was receiving email when I started BBSing when I was 7, so 1982/83? I remember having Prodigy in late elementary school ('85/86). By middle school, I was on Ddial (a chat system) and my main social life was folks I met there until I graduated from high school. 😅

"Today, BBSing survives largely as a nostalgic hobby in most parts of the world, but it is still a popular form of communication for middle-aged Taiwanese" (Wikipedia)

I don't think I was BBSing until 1990ish. From 85-90 I was at university and connecting to the outside world via the university's Internet connection.

The only two clients I have still using fax (lawyer, vet) have been VoIP with fax-email gateways for years now. Pacnet is gone. Even for vintage BBSing you'd use a network FOSSIL not a modem!

#Atari BBS history! I recently came across an original disk of FoReM MPP, one of the pioneering BBS software titles for Atari 8-bit. Another step in preserving Atari BBS heritage!

I started BBSing as a preteen in the 90s and have been "online" ever since. I believe that encouraging kids to jump onto a demonstrably toxic and compromised platform run by a rich nazi propagandist with an inside line to the nation's king pedophile leads nowhere good.
hell, baby mecha hitler aside, X is absolutely no place for kids, jesus christ, talk about chumming the water

BBSing -> IRC/Usenet -> Instant messaging/forums and discussion sites -> journaling sites -> the whole evolutionary arc of social media -> mostly just dying Twitter and Bluesky
