i've seen some cursed things in my time as a nix user. but oh my god. i was shown a flake that generates outputs for each architecture, platform, nixpkgs version and if systemd is present. and it would generate this using autotools. AUTOTOOLS in the year of our lord 2025

You may come across my autogen.sh script and see that it tests for whether intltool is needed. But this is because my coworker used intltool That script goes way back. I am proud of it. I would say it was the best damn general purpose autogen.sh script for GNU autotools, if modesty did not […]

I never liked CMake. It never offered anything over autotools save for Windows compatibility. Bazel, meson, ninja, et al. There isn’t a build system I haven’t touched. I mostly use bitbake because I build Linux systems. I have to patch random software and/or their builds to deal with breakages.

And also, just saying "yes" to autotools would have the PR landed like 18 months ago. Just saying 😆.

Is it gcc or autotools (i.e. the ./configure stuff)?

I've been pretty happy any time I've done my own thing with GCC and Make, but autotools projects can be so frustrating. Like I'm 99% sure there are gotchas to autotools that everyone misses or neglects, that lead to so many headaches. 🤢
