The only disruptive thing I’ve personally noticed south of the border is that AWIAL was treated as as specialty/indie release. I had to drive TWO hours to an independent exhibitor to see it. None of the otherwise-Desi-film-friendly theaters showed it. (And perhaps not Laaptaa Ladies either!!)

Laapataa Ladies definitely went into mainstream cinemas here. But AWIAL *is* an indie/arthouse film -- the North American distributor was Janus Films, known for arthouse film distribution. So it would go into markets where people would watch it -- not where I am, but Toronto for sure.

Laapataa Ladies is a perfectly good film -- I enjoyed it! But when you have a brilliant film like AWIAL, which was acclaimed at Cannes, which had/has good backing for the Oscar run (= needs lots of money and attention), why not make the obvious choice and set aside old grudges? Sigh.
