#AVFC's
Remember two seasons ago Son scored a hat-trick of offsides against #AVFC's high line. While Villa aren't as dramatically high here, the line is still brave. Kudus, Tel, Odobert all looking to run behind. Aggressive man-marking game with 1v1s out-wide is very interesting.

Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Buendia and Jadon Sancho are available for #AVFC's trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

Tyrone Mings is expected to train tomorrow, with a decision to be taken on whether he is involved afterwards.

The season's extreme fluctuation is problematic in ascertaining #AVFC's true level. Can Unai Emery continue to eke out more? Or will this season be when they plateau? The next three league games will provide a more telling gauge... @theathleticfc.bsky.social

Occupying different spaces makes the opponent react. #AVFC’s No 10s are carefully designed constructs of Unai Emery. His counterparts have attempted varying strategies to nullify his No 10s, shown in the last week.

Three games inside a week brought three different strategies from opponents, all attempting to nullify #AVFC’s most open secret - Emery’s chess piece no 10s. Yet no one did or can - very rarely are they kept quiet. Here’s why:

Emery says he is trying to adjust Donyell Malen into #AVFC's structure. Against Burnley's back five, he wanted to get "one more player in the attacking third," but believes Malen is best starting higher and near the opponent's box, so starting central means he's more effective.

What a finish. Malen becomes #AVFC's leading PL goalscorer this season in one game.

Hell of a finish. A snapshot. Rogers gets the ball in the perfect position between the lines (Laurent wasn't there) and tees up Malen. He controls and shoots, almost straight away. Emphatic. 2-0

On paper, Malen has simply replaced Guessand

But if you look at #AVFC's average positions compared to Fulham, Guessand (29) was a typical Emery winger, moving up top at certain times. Whereas Malen (17) is a traditional No 9 today, tasked with finishing (only four passes so far)

Feyenoord getting into #AVFC's box with ease. A result of cheap turnovers in central areas. Rogers has to be sharper. Does feel it all or nothing when Villa build-up. They either break out and are on Feyenoord's backline or concede a big chance

#AVFC's No 10s well in this game. Rogers and Buendia combining as Watkins making runs off Ahmedhozic (clearly targeting right channel, shown for the possible red card). A frantic start to the game, but Villa can cause issues going forward. Guessand's positioning again interesting

Tyrone Mings expected to return following the int'l break. 32yo will miss #AVFC's games against Feyenoord & Burnley due to an ankle injury. Further tests were undertaken once swelling had reduced - hopeful Mings returns for Spurs Oct 19. @theathleticfc.bsky.social

Thursday night will be #AVFC’s first away game in the Europa League/UEFA Cup since a 2-0 defeat to CSKA Moscow in February 2009.

In European football overall, they’ve alternated between winning and losing their last seven away matches, losing their last vs PSG in April earlier this year ⤵️

Martinez saves after Fulham work the ball from a goal kick. #AVFC's press was a few yards off it. That's the lack of intensity people speak and criticise

Jimenez has scored but is now injured and has to come off.

Adama comes on in his place, which probably doesn't help #AVFC's perennial fears of transitions

New video! Instant reaction to Monchi leaving Aston Villa.

Don't think Monchi's been either a roaring success or failure. Would also argue he's had one of the more difficult sporting director jobs in recent years given AVFC's PSR/SCR woes.

I see Villa fans have been introduced to Trai "Your legs are a luxury" Hume 😂

Up there with the one on Brereton Diaz tackle, that one. The second angle (from behind the goal) showed it perfectly: Ball first, man second - tremendous challenge.

Full quotes from Unai Emery after #AVFC's draw with Sunderland.

Says his team were “lazy”, Harvey Elliott was passing too quickly, needing to connect with shorter passes and admitted his players were not fighting like he wanted.

Cash has been #AVFC's biggest threat. Neither he or Watkins get on the end of Sancho's good delivery. Konsa drops to the floor and punches the pitch. Three minutes left of stoppage time.

Emery stated #AVFC's lack of goals is not an individual issue but a collective ("final pass"). Villa weren't great vs Everton. Brentford, but did work the ball better into the No 10s. The most difficult parts are the next bits - final pass, run and shot. Big focus on that, today

Really think tomorrow is a huge (and exciting) game in #AVFC's season. A win could shift the mood, internally and externally, considerably. Emery believes the last two games are laying the foundations for improvement - you need to see the results/goals starting tomorrow.

Buendia has been #AVFC's brightest spark. Intelligent positioning and is driving the side upfield. Both teams lacking quality in the final third. Everton look uncomfortable when Villa have Cash and Digne high, with the No 10s all central.
