Had another great day of students rolling up characters and building backstories for their characters using the robust and historically based character creation system for “Haunted West” by @darkerhue.bsky.social in service of a project exploring the history of “the West.”

"Um, Mr. Barker, so I like to have a candle lit while I'm working on my homework and the coversheet for (core APUSH unit assignment) accidentally got set on top of the candle. Is it OK if I turn it in like this?" (shows me coversheet with a scorch mark on it.)

I have thought APUSH for many, many years. Last year I brought AP African Studies to my district and school. Building the class was probably the most important thing I have done in my 20 years of Ed.

I teach CA, Santa Clara County.

he's sort of technically correct in that marbury v. madison defined a role for scotus that was not actually in the constitution but also it's only correct in the pedantic way an APUSH student who just learned this fact would trumpet?

It’s such a great exercise in constructing meaning as they have to connect the story they built to the real lives lived by the diverse peoples who inhabited that time and place.

Plus they get to roll dice 🤓😎

So this seems like a good time to share the NukeMap website.

You can drop a nuclear bomb on any map location, select the size of any known tested weapon, and see the various damage radii and fallout patterns. 😬

It's a regular feature when we cover the Cold War in APUSH. #HATM
NUKEMAP by Alex Wellerstein
NUKEMAP is a website for visualizing the effects of nuclear detonations.

I use excerpts from @kimkelly.bsky.social’s Fight Like Hell with my #APUSH class. Her writing is so good and engaging. I love the way she tells stories about her subjects and brings life to past activists.

Oh dang, I'm giving a test on Monday in APUSH, which means I get to set the passwords. I had them as Buffalo, Lockport, and Syracuse because we're doing Period 4 (1800-1848), but now I think I have to make them Fitzgerald, Anderson, and Lightfoot, right?

this isn't relevant to anything at all, but when i was in apush, i distinctly remember coming across henry clay's name *again* in a chapter section and thinking, "this bitch isn't dead yet?"
when you start thinking of pelosi's historical peers you're thinking of people like henry clay

This is your friendly APUSH teacher, noting that it was a running theme that at least once a year, a student would refer to the Supreme Court decision of Eugene v. Debs in an essay on the actual APUSH exam.

It was like clockwork.
November 5, 2025 at 4:27 AM
I'm gonna disagree with Google AI on this one.

Johnny Appleseed is taught ages 4 to 8 and I'm thinking Eugene Debs can be started then too.
